Chelsea Pottery was established in Radnor Walk, London SW3 in 1952 by David Rawnsley and his wife Mary. It was
run like a club where any potter could work and study pottery for an annual sub of 5 guineas and an hourly fee
of sixpence plus a further sixpence for a pound of clay. Joyce Morgan was the main instructor at their evening
classes for amateurs and her work is amongst the most sought after by collectors - she was originally working as
a fabric designer in Paris when she met David.

In 1959 the Rawnsleys left London and set up another pottery in the Bahamas – Joyce joined them there but didn’t
like the climate and came back to London after just 5 months. She returned to Radnor Walk and helped Brian
Hubbard run Chelsea Pottery for nearly 40 years more with various other potters and modelers.

They had a rich and famous clientele consisting of various leading actors and musicians and were hugely
successful for many years. Brian met The Beatles in a TV studio in the early 1960s and stayed in contact with
Paul McCartney who commissioned Chelsea to make Christmas mugs for him for many years afterwards.
